Evaluation of Coursework From Other Colleges & Entities

Danville Area Community College accepts 100-level and 200-level coursework from other postsecondary institutions who have been accredited by approved regional accrediting bodies. Accreditation shows that the institutions have been evaluated by recognized accreditors and are determined, by their peers, to meet acceptable levels of educational quality. In some instances, an upper-division course may be considered for credit if the course syllabus is equivalent to a specific DACC course syllabus.

As part of the DACC application process, students are asked to send “official” transcripts from all institutions previously attended. Once the transcript is received by the DACC Records Office, the transcript is evaluated for credits applicable to the student’s declared major/program of study which will include any math or English credit for course placement. If the student has not indicated a program of study or is “undecided,” only the math and English credits will be evaluated. (Please Note: Students who have indicated “undecided” as their major/program of study are not eligible for Federal and/or State student aid consideration.) After the evaluation has been completed, students will be able to view transfer-in credit via the Jaguar Spot/Online Student Services or by contacting the Records Office at 217-443-8797. The evaluation will specify what the transferred coursework equated to at Danville Area Community College.

If a student updates/changes their major/program of study declaration or wants career-oriented (vocational) coursework to be evaluated, the student should contact the Records Office in Vermilion Hall to make the request. We will need to know the student’s specific major at that time.

Not more than forty-five credit hours will be accepted by transfer. Please note, for a DACC certificate, a minimum of one-half the credits required must be earned at DACC. Servicemembers are allowed special circumstances. Please note the Servicemember Residency Requirement information below.

Accepted coursework will appear on the student’s DACC transcript. Only credit hours are noted on the DACC transcript. Grades are not figured in to the student’s DACC cumulative grade point average. However, if a student is a candidate for Summa Cum Laude honors at commencement, grades will be considered for any coursework that is used for degree completion.

Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI)

DACC is a participant in the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a statewide agreement that allows transfer of the completed Illinois General Education Core Curriculum between participating institutions. Completion of the transferable General Education Core Curriculum at any participating college or university in Illinois assures transferring students that lower-division general education requirements for an associate or bachelor's degree have been satisfied. This agreement is in effect for students entering an associate or baccalaureate degree-granting institution as a first-time freshman in summer 1998 (and thereafter). More information about the Illinois Articulation Initiative is available online at www.itransfer.org.

Transferring Credits Out of the College

Universities and colleges prescribe their own standards of eligibility for admissions with advanced standing. In general, a student may transfer from a community college to a senior college or university after one or more semesters of community college work, provided that their scholastic average is C or above. (Some universities will not accept a course grade of D.) It is urged that students determine early in their academic career the school to which they plan to transfer. A careful check should be made of admission and transfer requirements. Some institutions have a maximum number of credits completed threshold that students cannot go over. It is highly recommended that a student complete an Associate in Science (AS) or an Associate in Arts (AA), Associate of Engineering Science (AES), Associate in Fine Arts in Art (AFA) and Associate in Fine Arts in Art Education (AFAE) degree before transferring to a senior college or university. Note: Career-oriented courses are not designed primarily for transfer. Transfer of such courses will depend upon the policy of the school to which the student is transferring.

How DACC Ensures Your Credit Transfers:

As a community college, one of our main goals is to ensure that our courses prepare students to transfer to senior institutions.  With this in mind and in following Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) rules, the College has developed courses and transfer degrees that are based on the State’s Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) general education core curriculum.

ICCB System Rules Manual:
Lower-division Baccalaureate Courses: Courses designed to meet lower division baccalaureate degree requirements shall be applicable to associate transfer degrees. For each baccalaureate course offered, the college shall either obtain approval for the course to be listed as a statewide articulated transfer course by a general education or baccalaureate major panel of the Illinois Articulation Initiative or maintain current written articulation agreements or transfer equivalency documents with:

  1. At least three Illinois public universities;
  2. At least three baccalaureate degree-granting institutions to which a majority (51%) of the college's students transfer; or
  3. One or more baccalaureate degree-granting institutions to which a majority (51%) of the college's students, majoring in the field for which the course is required, transfer.

No remedial course credit shall be applicable to associate degrees designed for transfer to institutions granting baccalaureate degrees.

Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI):
The Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Illinois Community College Board, and the Transfer Coordinators of Illinois Colleges and Universities brought together faculty from public and independent, associate and baccalaureate degree-granting institutions across the state to develop the IAI.  The goal of IAI is to facilitate transfer from one participating college or university to another in order to complete a baccalaureate degree.  There are three key concepts provided the underlying foundation for IAI:

  1. Associate and baccalaureate degree-granting institutions are equal partners in educating college freshman and sophomores;
  2. Faculties should take primary responsibility for developing and maintaining program and course articulation; and
  3. Institutions are expected to work together to assure that lower-division baccalaureate programs are comparable in scope, quality, and academic rigor.

The IAI includes a statewide general education package, the IAI General Education Core Curriculum (GECC).  Completion of this package fulfills the lower-division general education requirements for any participating institution.  In addition, the IAI includes recommendations for students wanting to study in a particular field but are unsure as to where they might complete a baccalaureate degree.

Processes in Place to Ensure Course Transferability:

The College incorporates the following guidelines and practices to ensure the transferability of courses and student transfer success:

  • Development of transfer courses that meet the statewide general education core curriculum, IAI, and/or ICCB’s transfer articulation standards.
  • Review and maintenance of transfer courses through course-level assessment, articulation maintenance, the IAI review process, and ICCB Program Review process.
  • Review of student transfer and success data (as provided by the four-year institutions and student feedback).
  • Requiring certificate/degree seeking and transfer-oriented students to register through Advisement and Counseling.  This requirement ensures that students 1) receive assistance in selecting courses, 2) understand course transferability and senior institution rules, and 3) understand their responsibility in the process.
  • Transfer Curriculum Guides are updated annually by Advisement & Counseling.  These updates are completed before the catalog and website are updated for the upcoming fall term (start of the new academic year).  Senior institutions are consulted as needed.
  • Articulated programs with other colleges and universities for career-oriented programs.
  • Special Articulated programs with other colleges and universities.
    • Examples include 3+1 and Illinois Pathways
  • DACC transfer associate degrees are structured to meet ICCB and IAI requirements.
  • Transfer tools developed for students, Advisors, High School Counselors, and other stakeholders to use:
    • Transfer Degree Graduation Requirements Worksheet
    • Degree Evaluation Worksheet
    • Transferology.com
    • Course Descriptions denote whether course is T (transfer) or C (career) and include IAI codes
  • Information provided during advisement sessions.
  • Information provided on DACC website and official publications such as the College Catalog.
  • Director of Advisement & Counseling is the College’s Transfer Articulation Coordinator and a member of the Transfer Coordinators of Illinois Colleges & Universities group.
  • Academic Advisors receive training and information year-round from senior institutions:
    • Advisors attend annual articulation meetings at the senior institutions, and receiving electronic updates throughout the year;
    • Advisors research institutions based on student need;
    • Advisement & Counseling hosts an annual University Transfer Day where they have a meeting with all the nearby institutions after students have had the chance to talk to all the university representatives; and
    • University representatives visit the College throughout the year to talk to students and Advisors.
Transferology.com

DACC also promotes and utilizes Transferology.com.  Transferology is a nation-wide network designed to help students explore their college transfer options.  Their goal is to save students time and money by providing a quick, intuitive way of getting their college transfer credit questions answered.  Students can answer the question, “Will my courses transfer?” by adding coursework, exams, and/or military learning experiences to see how many schools in the Transferology network have matching courses that may be awarded when they transfer.  They can also find out what their options are for taking classes over the summer (or whenever) at another school to transfer back to their current school by using the “Find a Replacement Course” feature.

Credit Transfer Money Back Guarantee

The Transfer Guarantee promises that any course taken and approved by DACC will transfer to the college or university that the student has selected. If a course which has been approved does not transfer, the College will refund the tuition and fees for the course.  Three steps must be in place to qualify for the credit transfer guarantee:

  • Students must register with a DACC Academic Advisor;
  • Students must know what their major/program of study is; and
  • Students must know what institution they are transferring to.

If all three of these requirements have been followed and a course does not transfer to a senior institution, the student is eligible to receive the Credit Transfer Money Back Guarantee.

University Transfer Agreements

Danville Area Community College has agreements in place with many four-year colleges and universities to facilitate the transfer of credits for students who intend to complete a bachelor’s degree. Associate in Science (AS), Associate Arts (AA), Associate in Engineering Science (AES) Associate in Fine Arts in Art (AFA) and Associate in Fine Arts in Art Education (AFAE) degree students who choose a course of study and transfer institution with the approval of an academic counselor, using established curriculum guidelines, may expect to complete a Bachelor’s degree in a timely fashion. If there is a major/school anywhere in the United States that does not have a prescribed transfer plan, one can be developed for the student working in concert with a DACC advisor and the transfer school of choice.
