Program Description

This program prepares students for careers in manufacturing and production technology.The career involves using: manufacturing technologies, processes and equipment; preparing layouts, drawings and sketches of machinery or equipment; and recommending ways to reduce loss, decrease time, or improve quality.

The work environment includes lathes, drill presses, milling equipment and machine tools. Students will be prepared to work in settings ranging from a traditional machine shop to a highly automated industrial environment using CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) equipment.

This is an occupational program typically not designed to transfer; however, this program has been articulated to some senior institutions.*Starting hourly rates may vary.

Job Prospects & Salary

Overall employment of machinists and tool and die makers is projected to decline 2 percent from 2024 to 2034.

Despite declining employment, about 34,200 openings for machinists and tool and die makers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. All of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
