College Express Course: Healthcare Professions

The Healthcare Professions program is designed for students interested in a career in healthcare. They will learn healthcare law, medical coding, patho-physiology and pharmacology, and healthcare regulations. The program is designed to offer a wide variety of learning experiences, including classroom lectures, hands on coding and learning both hospital and ambulatory healthcare settings management. Healthcare professionals in the field use electronic health records to document notes, enter diagnosis and procedure codes, and must abide by healthcare law and regulations. Each of these courses provide valuable knowledge for pursuing any health related profession.

Completion of these four courses results in having three (3) core classes completed in each of the following college programs:

  • Health Information Technology Associate Degree
  • Medical Coding Certificate
  • Healthcare Billing Management Certificate

Completion of HITT115 is used by the Nursing program as bonus points on the program application.

PHMB 100 ICD-10-CDM Diagnosis Coding Fall 2025 4 The Healthcare Professions course does not require any prerequisites therefore students can take this course their junior or senior years in high school This also would make a great second year course for any student who has taken Health Occupations during their junior year and would like to further their education in the healthcare field.
HITT 115 Patho-Physiology and Pharmacology Spring 2026 4 The mechanism of disease and its effect on the human body will be studied, with emphasis on etiology, symptoms, signs, diagnostic findings, and treatment. Special topics in pharmacology will be introduced, including terminology, drug category, uses, side effects, contraindications, and interactions of each body system in relation to the most common diseases, and common dosage ranges and routes.
HITT 205 Legal Aspects of Health Information Management and Ethics Fall 2024 2 The course will examine US court systems and the legal and ethical issues relation to health care. Specific federal and state regulations, compliance rules, and laws as they relate to the health information department, privacy, security, release of information, confidentiality, and the health record will be covered. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) rules and regulations will be covered in detail and their influence on the healthcare field.
HITT 255 Alternative Health Care Settings Insurance Procedures Spring 2025 3 This course addresses medical services, health record systems, regulatory agencies, reimbursement methodologies, and insurance for non-acute care settings. Topics include regulatory issues, documentation requirements, reimbursement, information management, quality improvement, risk management, and current trends for services provided in places such as nursing homes, home health, correctional facilities, hospice, and rehabilitation facilities. Basic concepts of healthcare reimbursement are covered along with types of payers, and types of insurance plans. The terminology, rationale and methodology, such as RUG III, RVU, APCs, IVCD, LMPR, ABN, and EOB used by third party payers to determine the reimbursement for health care providers will be examined. Proper completion of the 1500 billing form and legal issues related to reimbursement will be discussed, as well as the role of Health Information Management places in the Charge Description Master, Reimbursement Monitoring, Revenue Cycle, Compliance and Case-Mix Management. An overview of hospital and nursing homes billing systems including proper submissions of Uniform/Universal Billing Form 92s will also be covered.
