College Express Course: C.N.A.

The C.N.A. course is offered during morning and afternoon College Express. In addition, C.N.A. is also taught in Hoopeston at the Hoopeston Higher Learning Center. From hospitals to nursing homes, C.N.A. students will learn the skills necessary to be part of a compassionate health care team in a health care setting. In addition, the courses offered serve as an introduction to the Certified Nurse Assistant Program.

Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Office Assistant or Nursing are all jobs that the Health Occupations class can lead a student to with further education. Students taking the Health Occupations class must maintain an 82% (C Average) in the course in able to participate in clinicals, earn college credit and sit for the Illinois State Certified Nursing Assistant exam.

C.N.A. is a one-year program where students can earn college credit during high school. Students will take the following classes if enrolled in this one year program: Please note that the NURS 111 Basic Nursing Procedures course is the clinical portion of the program. Students will be required to perform hands-on care to patients in a healthcare facility.

Course Semester Hours Description
NURS 107 Introduction to Health Occupations Fall 2 This course is an introduction to careers in the healthcare area. Students will have the opportunity to research and discuss areas in the Health occupational field in which the yare interested. By the end of the class students will know the educational requirements, employment opportunities and salary expectations for numerous health occupations. This course also serves as an introduction to the Certified Nursing Assistant Program.
NURS 111 Basic Nursing Procedures Summer 2 This class is designed to prepare students to provide basic health care in hospitals and nursing homes. This is the clinical portion of the program and will be scheduled after the Spring College Express Semester ends.
NURS 120 Role of the Nursing Assistant/Health Occupations 1 Fall 2 The initial 45 hours of 99 hour program meets during the Fall semester and is designed to prepare students to provide basic health care in health care facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes. Instruction will include such topics as: Understanding healthcare settings, the healthcare team, legal and ethical issues, human growth and development, the aging process, common acute and chronic conditions, and Alzheimer's Disease.
NURS 121 Role of the Nursing Assistant 2/Health Occupations 2 Spring 3 The final 54 hours of a 99 hour program meets during the Spring semester and is designed to prepare students to provide basic health care in health care facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes. Instruction will include such topics as: Infection control, safety and body mechanics, emergency care, lifting ad moving a resident, personal care skills, basic nursing skills, nutrition and elimination, and rehabilitation and restorative care.
