Military Credit

Military Credit Evaluation

DACC follows the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide when determining transfer-in coursework from military credit. Below is a brief description of the ACE Military Guide from the ACE website:

ACE's Military Guide presents credit recommendations and detailed summaries for formal courses and occupations offered by all branches of the military. These credit recommendations appear on the service member’s Joint Services Transcript (JST).

All recommendations are based on ACE reviews conducted by college and university faculty members who are actively teaching in the areas they review. The team assesses and validates whether the courses or occupations have the appropriate content, scope, and rigor for college credit recommendations.

The Military Guide includes all evaluated courses and occupations from 1954 to the present. New courses and occupations are continually being evaluated by ACE, and these entries are added on a daily basis. ACE only reviews courses and occupations selected by the military services.

Due to our agreement through the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), military credit cannot be used to satisfy the general education course curriculum (GECC) for a transfer associate degree here at DACC; however, military credit can be used to satisfy the elective requirements for these degrees. Military credit CAN be applied toward general education requirements for students pursuing the Associate in General Studies (AGS) degree as well as general elective credit.

If a student is pursuing an Associate in Applied Science degree or a certificate, military credit can be applied toward general education requirements or major-specific coursework if the military credit coincides with the student’s intended program of study. For example, if a veteran was a part of the military police and is planning to major in criminal justice, then the dean of that department would review the student’s military credit for equivalent criminal justice coursework. If a student is intending to pursue a different career path, his or her military transcript will still be evaluated for general education credit.

ACE recommendations and the Joint Services Transcript are only for veterans of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. The Air Force awards college credit through the Community College of the Air Force, and this credit is evaluated the same as credit transferred in from any other college or university.
