October 11 Event to Feature Military Uniform
DANVILLE – DACC Foundation and College officials will gather Thursday, October 11, 2018, at 10 a.m. to rededicate the Garden Gateway on the campus’ Northeast Lawn and celebrate the military accomplishments of the man who funded it, Julius W. Hegeler II.
The Garden Gateway at Danville Area Community College was first dedicated in August, 2009. The ornamental structure bears the inscription, “Knowledge is the Gateway to Endless Possibilities” and serves to inspire students as they enter the grounds with the reminder that the possibilities for students at DACC are endless.
The gift from Julius W. Hegeler II that built the Garden Gateway was just the first in a series to fund hardscape projects on the DACC campus. Subsequent projects included improvements to the Ornamental Horticulture building, new greenhouses, an addition to the Technology Center, and funding to renovate the Carneighi Library – now known as Jacobs Hall.
At the conclusion of the Gateway ceremony, the festivities will move inside the Julius W. Hegeler II Advanced Technology Center for the unveiling of Mr. Hegeler’s Air Force uniform and medals. The uniform, donated by Mr. Hegeler, will be on permanent display inside the Technology Center within a shadow box.
“The Foundation is pleased to make a permanent display of Mr. Hegeler’s uniform,” said Tonya Hill, Executive Director of the DACC Foundation. “We are honored that he would entrust us with such a cherished and valuable piece of his personal history.”
The public is invited to attend both ceremonies.
