COURSE
OUTLINE
Course
Name: Physical
Science II
Credit Hours: 4
Instructor: Kathy
R. Sturgeon
Office: MMC280 Campus Hours are posted
outside of door. If the times are not
convenient
for you, feel free to call and arrange an appointment. Remember,
concepts
build on each other. Leaving some gaps in understanding now may not
seem
too important, but it will seriously impair performance later. I
encourage
all students to come and visit with me; in the minutes of a one-on-one
interaction I can probably help more than in several hours of
lecture! For online classes office hours are by
appointment. Generally questions can be asked via email or
discussion boards. I'll check both once a day during the week.

Textbook
and Required Materials:
- Physical Science,
6th Edition. Bill W. Tillery. Wm. C. Brown Publishers, 1996.
- Physical Science
142 Lab Manual,
Carl G. Davis. Available in DACC bookstore.
- On
campus students are required to purchase an
iclicker
remote from the DACC bookstore. Iclicker is a response system
that
allows you to respond to questions I pose during class; you will be
graded
on that feedback and/or participation. In order to receive this
credit,
you will need to register your iclicker remote in class. I will
project
a
Registration screen with 3 steps to follow in class. You simply
look
for your student ID which will alphabetically scroll down the screen
and
follow the directions on the screen. Once your remote is
registered,
your student ID will no longer appear on that scrolling list and you
are
registered for the entire semster. If for some reason you can't
follow
this steps, I will need to register you by the third day of class. This
requires that you email me prior to that day. Iclicker will be
used
everyday in class, and you are responsible for bringing your remote
daily.
Your student ID which will consist of you first initial and the first
four
letters of your last name. (Ex: Tom Johnson's student ID is
tjohn.)
Course
Description:
PHYS 142 is an introductory course in geology, astronomy and
meteorology.
Emphasis is placed on the basic concepts of these sciences to give the
student a better understanding of the earth, atmosphere, and the
universe.
The course is taught using active and cooperative learning
techniques.
Students will be expected to work in teams to produce several
projects.
For non-science majors. Course objectives:

Philosophy
of the Course.
YOU are in charge of your own learning. Unless you take an active role
in learning, we will not be successful. I do want my students to
succeed
in this course! I want my students to be interested in what goes on in
class, to conquer new concepts, to continue developing the skills
exercised
in other science and math classes, and to better understand application
of science and mathematics to their own interest (and there are many!).
But, this will not happen without your enthusiastic participation.
Attendance, Withdrawal Policy,
and Course Policies:
See the Course
Policy link at http://www.dacc.edu/~kjenkins/welcome2.html.The
course policy is distributed on the first day of class (orange
sheet).
You are expected to review the material as you will be quizzed over the
content of the course policy. Attendance, participation in group
work, and oral presentation are fundemental to meeting the objectives
of
this course.
