COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A study of the properties of real numbers, the properties of exponents and radicals, the arithmetic of polynomial and rational expressions, linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations, and an introduction to functions. Problem-solving skills and critical-thinking skills are emphasized. Meets 4 hours per week. 3 lecture hours, 1 lab hour.
PREREQUISITES:
Place into MATH 105 with approved and documented math placement test scores or by completing MATH 101 with a grade of S.
NOTES:
COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
The student should be able to do the following:
- Be able to learn and apply algebraic processes to problems, and be able to write math in exact symbolic forms. Students must have the ability to do basic arithmetic by hand. Therefore, calculator usage and other technology is not allowed on quizzes and tests in Math 105 "with the exception of students with disabilities who have an approved accommodation." Students with a calculator exception will take quizzes and tests in the Assessment Center.
- Use symbols of set notation.
- Evaluate expressions involving real numbers and the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponentiation.
- Identify the properties of the real number system and use these properties to simplify arithmetic and algebraic expressions.
- Use the rules of exponents to simplify expressions involving integral and rational exponents.
- Use scientific notation in calculating solutions to problems.
- Solve first degree equations and inequalities, including those involving absolute value.
- Solve applications using first degree equations and inequalities.
- Graph linear equations, linear inequalities, and systems of linear equations and inequalities.
- Write equations of lines using point-slope, slope-intercept, and the slope formula.
- Define a function and apply function notation.
- Solve systems of linear equations in two and three variables.
- Factor polynomials using the following methods: Greatest Common Factor, Difference of Two Squares, Difference of Two Cubes, Sum of Two Cubes, Grouping, Perfect Trinominal Square, and trinomials.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions, and simplify complex fractions.
- Change an exponential expression to its equivalent radical form, simplify a radical expression, apply the four basic operations to radical expressions, and solve equations involving radical and exponential expressions.
- Solve quadratic equations by factoring, the quadratic formula, and the square root property.
- Define complex numbers, apply four fundamental operations over the set of complex numbers, and solve equations with complex roots.
- Optional topics: (as time permits)
- Statistics, Synthetic Division, Graphs of Non-linear Functions, completing the square
The student should obtain a 60% competency as measured by examination to receive a passing grade. A student who is taking this course as a prerequisite for another math course should receive a 70% competency before taking the succeeding course.
