COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of computer and network security issues including the numerous types of attacks computerrs are vulnerable to, the types of attacker profiles, and the hardware and software defense solutions available.  The course begins with an overview of the subject including security goals, the importance of security, intruder profiles, and defense mechanisms.  The topics subsequently covered include security and the individual personal computer in both the home and corporate environments.  This includes protecting the single device from the threats of data theft, viruses and spyware, techniques of authentication and security patch management.  Next, corporate security is presented including policy issues invovlving e-mail, Internet access, passwords, Incident Response and Disaster Recovery.  Internet Security and Network Security are addressed focusing on the threats to WIN and LAN networks and methods of protecting each type of network.  Finally, the class pulls all of the concepts together, presenting a picture of "Total Security".

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
  • Plan and configure an authorization and authentication strategy in a multi-forest organization.
  • Install, configure, and manage a certification authority (CA).
  • Configure, deploy, and manage certificates.
  • Plan, implement, and troubleshoot smart card certificates.
  • Plan, implement, and troubleshoot Encrypting File System (EFS).
  • Plan, configure, and deploy and secure member server baseline.
  • Plan, configure, implement secure baselines for server roles.
  • Plan, configure, implement, and deploy a secure client computer baseline.
  • Plan and implement Software Update Services.
  • Plan, implement, and troubleshoot data transmission security.
  • Plan and implement security for wireless networks.
  • Plan and implement perimeter security with Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA) 2000.
  • Secure remote access.

Materials: Minimum 8GB hard drive and removable tray (already purchased for previous class)

EVALUATION:
A point system will be used to evaluate a student’s progress.  Points will be assigned to all work, such as lab projects, research papers, quizzes, tests and a final exam.  The following percentages (of possible points) will be used to determine grades:

92.5% - 100% = A
85% - 92.4% = B
77.5% - 84.9% = C
70% - 77.4% = D
0% - 69.9% = F
